We have been planning the 2021 festival ever since the last one was cancelled because of COVID. We are watching the statistics very closely and are planning on having the festival unless the governor intervenes or good sense obliges us to postpone.

Everyone's health is our first priority.
To that end, we invite you to sign up to volunteer.

You will be able to sign up for classes and preorder swag online that you will pick up at the festival. We have tee shirts, a dynamic patch, tote bags, hats, and aprons. There's something for everyone. We will reserve your classes and items and bill you in mid October when we confirm we are putting on the festival.

Please note: You are not officially registered for a class until payment is received. Every effort will be made
to promptly indicate when a class is full. In the event that a student pays for a class that has just filled,
the money will be refunded, and that student will be notified by email. If classes do not meet
the minimum student requirement by November 1st, they may be canceled, the students notified
and the registration money refunded. If paying by check, please mail by September 30, 2021.

This large bowl (approximate 10” diameter) is created for the center of your Thanksgiving Dinner table. Students will apply acrylic paints to make it look like wood, using a pattern to draw the corn around the bowl, and applying paint to color.  We will then finish the bowl off with woven seagrass around the rim. This class is suitable for beginners and advanced students.

This is a fun class where you can learn to use household items to create texture. The student will also learn how to sculpt Quickwood, decoupage, and tips on how to create expressive eyes with paint and varnish. There will be an assortment of napkins and paints available for the student to create their own, one-of-a-kind, masterpiece! The gourd “fish” are 4 to 6” X 4 to 6” before adding the fins and head.

Spend the morning learning how to twirl wool to look like evergreen branches, lavender, or holly berries. The second step of the project is to firmly attach branches to a grapevine wreath and add a bow. What will make this project stand out is the addition of three snowy bells made from gourd tops and a "mudding" technique.

We all have an Old Soul within; come make yours with gourd tops and QuikWood. Each one will have a unique personality and be a little quirky. A simple paint technique and highlights with an antique gel or dark wax will complete the look. Each person receives ONE tube of QuikWood and up to two gourd tops if needed.

Liven up your home with some new "plants" that are very easy to take care of - cactus! We'll be using your choice of gourd shape (bell, banana, wing, crown of thorns - etc!) and create one or two life-like prickly cacti. We'll color them with inks, make unique patterns in adding the spines and fluff for that realistic look, and top them with flowers for a little color. Each gets it own terracotta pot too! We'll be using awls to create the pin holes and all materials are provided. You'll leave with one or two finished pet cacti. No experience necessary!

If students do not bring their own, they may have to wait to use these items which might delay completion of their projects.

SA-PM-9 Peruvian Giraffe

We will use 3 different gourds to create a giraffe as would be created in Peru. I will have tools that Peruvians use so you can try them, but you are welcome to use your woodburner and carver as well. You will learn how to burn the spots on the giraffe (Peruvian technique) and how to incorporate different materials like leather and dowels for ears. 10-12-inches tall. You will learn how to burn your gourd to make it black and shiny. You will learn how to gouge out your pattern to make it look more 3-D and learn how to give it a shine and protection by using wax and a little heat to seal it.

Learn how to do a basic coil stitch and a closed coiling stitch on a pine needle rim around a pre decorated gourd shard. The hair slide can be done in your choice of thread colors and instruction will be given on how to glycerin your pine needles for use, how to coil, different techniques on how to decorate your shard piece. Everyone will be given an extra prepared shard to decorate on their own at home in addition to the class.

The Gourd Light is a fun class in which the student will learn more about basic carving and drilled holes of various sizes. Transform an ordinary kettle/cannon gourd into a sweet glowing light! With the LED bulb (provided), your design will shine beautifully on nearby surfaces. The beads can be inserted into some of the holes for a little accent color. This class involves drilling lots and lots of little holes! It's a noisy, dusty, fun project, not suitable for people under age 19, or those who would have difficulty with repetitive motion. Most classes involve power tools and hot or sharp equipment and are geared toward adults.

This project hits all the notes; intaglio carving, filigree carving, coloring with wood dyes, inks, and acrylic paint. The finished project covers the entire gourd. We will take this project step by step to completion. Finished size is approximately 6" x 6".

Instructor will provide: Instruction and Pattern sheet, wood dyes, inks, and paint, gourd cleaned and prepped, paint brushes, applicators, gloves, pencils, Mr. Clean erasers.


Students should bring: Rotary carver with the correct collets or adaptors to fit burrs, a battery-operated rotary carver will not hold up to the extensive carving. apron, face mask, burrs needed are Small Ball, inverted cone, medium ball, filigree, flame or round nosed tapered, diamond burrs for smoothing. The tungsten burs are too aggressive; carbide steel is the best or regular steel.

Spend the morning experimenting with alcohol inks and embellishments (alloys, mylar, and metallics). The class is geared to exploring alcohol ink properties. Students will also discover advantages of base coating gourds with Artisan dyes. By the end of the class students will create three small colorful cannonball gourds and two yupo cards.

This sweet 6 inch bowl is painted with acrylic, using a stress stroke to blend the colors of the sky. Students then use Quick wood to form their dragonflies around the gourd then paint them. To finish it off we will weave the seagrass around the rim.

We’re making our own little 8-legged friends – baby octopuses! We'll learn how to realistically create them using two egg gourds, QuikWood clay, and glass eyes. The class covers how to make glass eyes, combining gourds, sculpting, and once made we’ll paint them. Using photo references and some whimsy, they’ll be crawling off the table before you know it! You’ll leave with a finished adorable pet octopus.
