Basic Power Carving

Class description:
This class is perfect for those who want to learn how to get more out of a Dremel tool or other brand of rotary carver. In this class, you’ll learn about using your power tool more effectively, and all about different types of burs and what they do. You’ll learn techniques and will carve sand ripples, basic relief carving, and carving for inlay. Carving safety and types of equipment will be discussed.
Instructor will provide a handout and a packet with decorative items.
This class will be held in a tent outside the building.
All day class! Class will break for lunch from noon to 1 pm.

Iridescent Collage Vessel

Students should bring:
A rotary carver with small ball burrs and a wood burner with assorted pens. Don’t forget your apron!
Optional: Students can bring their own collage paper and rim decorations if they prefer. Students are encouraged to bring other decorations they may want to incorporate into the piece, such as found wood for the rim of the gourd.
Instructor will provide:
Gourds, paper for collage, paint-sticks, philodendron sheaths, botanicals, waxed linen thread, and seed beads.
Class Description:
Learn how to work with Gelato iridescent paint sticks on a collaged vessel. Students will collage a gourd with several different choices of paper. A line design will be wood burned on the collage area once dry. You’ll carve a dimple in the newspaper to hold a glued seed bead. Paint-sticks are applied over the entire gourd with excess wiped off. Finishing of the rim will incorporate provided philodendron sheaths and a variety of dried botanicals. Vessel is approximately 5″ high x 5½” wide. Students should expect to complete about 90% of this project during class time; instructor will provide information to complete the project.

Bird and Butterfly Bowl

Instructor will bring tools for class to share.
Class Description:
You will learn how to make the bird, butterflies, faux filigree, and rim treatment but not by carving! This is going to be a discovery class you will not believe after you get to class. You will get to make your bowl first with what I have already made for you. You will learn how to make your own embellishments before leaving the class and have a lot of fun making them. Discover this intriguing technique that you can use on many gourds! Bowl is about 6” tall. Most students will leave with a finished project.

Fanciful Gourd Betta Fish

Class Description:
What can be fancier than a feisty betta fish? We’ll use banana gourds or small egg gourds for their bodies and Quikwood clay to sculpt their faces. I’ll show you how to use and warp craft plastic for their flowing fins. Unlike the other fish classes I’ve taught, we’ll be using different methods to wave and wiggle their fins and each fish will get two tails. We’ll also be making custom glass eyes for them. No experience is necessary. We’ll be painting them in whatever fancy colors you like and each will get a wooden base. You’ll leave the class with one very fanciful betta fish! The fish will be about 5″ to 6″.

A Webs Entanglement

Heat tool; scissors.
Class Description:
You will learn how to weave a web from wire and attach to the gourd. You will also learn how to turn half of a mini bottle gourd into spider to attach to the web. I will have creepy cloth on the gourd for you. You will apply the color of your choice. You’ll take home a finished project approximately 6″ to 9″.

Christmas Ornament

Master pro carver or Dremel with small bits, apron, small old towel, mask, gloves.
Class Description:
The student will create a small Christmas ornament. We will use a small torch to burn the dark part of the gourd; will also learn to apply the white paint on the lines. Students will leave with a finished ornament.

Diamonds of Gold

Nothing is required. Optionally, bring an apron, basket weaving tools, mister, old towel. Instructor will have tools and basins for class use.
Class Description:
Woven on a 6″ square wood base, this reed and sea grass basket uses over/under and 3-rod wale to weave up to a folded rim embellished with natural wood beads. The basket is finished with color matching smocking. Color choices: Dark Blue, Fall Red, Royal Purple. Finished size: 8½” L x 8½” W x 5″ H. Students should expect to finish about 95% of this project during class time; instructor will provide information to complete the basket.
