Hummingbird with Flower

You will make a hummingbird hovering over a beautiful flower. Finished size of project is approximately 8 inches. Most students should expect to complete approximately 95% of the project during class.

Students should bring:

Apron.

Instructor will provide:

Gourds, quick wood, paint, dowel rods, hot glue, wire, and accessories.


Sun-PM-32 Quilled Christmas Class

Students will learn quilling techniques and take those learned techniques to make the 3 canvases. Quilling is an art form where strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The name “quilling” is thought to come from the use of bird feathers, or quills, to roll the paper strips in the past. This is a technique course that a student can take and use on gourds or other media. Each canvas is 3″ x 3″. Most students will finish 85% to 100% of the project during class time.

Students need to bring: Apron

Instructor will supply: Everything that is needed for the quilling techniques – tools, canvases, papers, glues, instruction.


Sun-PM-33 Swedish Star

Students will complete a 10” Swedish Star (also known as a Snowflake) out of reed.

Color choices will be available at class time. Finished project is 10” diameter. Most students will complete the majority of this basket during class time but may need to finish after class.

Students bring: 50 small to medium clips (1” to 2”). Students will take their project home held together with clips since the glue may not dry in time.

Instructor provides: Precut pieces of reed, glue, and tools are provided.

Spotty Dotty Beaded Necklace

Students will learn to apply a dotting technique on a tiny gourd, creating colorful layers using alcohol ink. The gourd will then become the focal point of a necklace utilizing beads made from metal, stone, and other materials. Students will also learn some how to utilize some basic jewelry making findings and fasteners. Finished size: 18” – 30” necklace cord. Most students will leave with a finished project.

Students should bring: An apron if desired, a personal drying device (heat gun, hair dryer, etc. – some will be on hand). If the student has any personal beads that they have been wanting to use for some jewelry – the hole must be at least 1mm.

Instructor will provide:  All other materials including: gourd, beads, necklace cord, metal findings / fastener, paint brushes, daubers, water for project, water container, 91% alcohol, glue, scissors, etc.

Note: This class is offered twice – on Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.


Sun-PM-35 Gourdeous Girls

Skill level: Beginner

Kids class: Create three dolls from gourds! Use a banana gourd and a round calabash (or spinner) for the head. Paint and add embellishments and hair. One doll gets a hat. A hot glue gun may be used. Finished size of each doll is 6″ to 7″ tall. Most students will finish the dolls during class time.

Student needs to wear clothes that can get paint on them. Students under 12 must have an adult accompany them; together, the adult and child will create three gourd dolls.

Instructor will provide: Gourds pre-cut and ready to paint and assemble, a base, paint, hot glue guns, glue sticks, Sharpies, embellishments, hair, a hat, etc.


Sun-PM-36 Adventures in Recycled Sari Silk Yarn

Design your own keepsake gourd using recycled sari silk yarn. Outside the gourd, inside the gourd, or a design of your own. Finished project is 6” to 8”. Most students should finish the project during class time.

Students should bring scissors and an apron. Bring a battery operated light if you are visually challenged.

Instructor provides: Recycled sari silk yarn, gourd, and glue.


Sun-PM-37 Free Weaving for Fall

Skill level: Beginner / Intermediate

This class will present you with a number of design challenges and you will learn how best to meet them. You will also learn about selecting colors and color theory. We will be using 3 selections of fall colors. You will be able to experiment mixing yarns to highlight textures and mix reed and yarns to create a unique look. You will need an awl to make holes to warp the cut-out areas of your gourd, and how to link the different sections to make the sections relate.

Most students will complete the project during class.

Students should bring an awl, a small bucket to keep reed wet, a small towel to keep your lap from getting wet, and a pair of scissors to cut reed and yarn. Optionally bring beads and embellishments and yarn from home that you want to use on your project.

Instructor will provide a cleaned and cut gourd, 9″-10″ tall, 6″-8″ wide with most holes cut to save time, assorted yarn and reed, awl and scissors to share and glue.
