Gourd Charm Owls

We all need a little extra luck – these charm owls will help! We’ll be making two small owls with symbols of your choice on their bellies. They’ll be made from egg gourds and QuikWood clay. You’ll learn how to sculpt various feather textures and painting techniques. Each owl will get a mini eye hook so it can be worn as a pendant or hung as an ornament. You’ll leave with two completed owls. Each owl is about 3 inches tall. Most students will finish both owls during class.
Students should bring: Sculpting tools; apron.
Instructor provides: Gourds, clay, paint, instructions, and eye hooks.

Sun-AM-22 Quilled Halloween Class

Students will learn quilling techniques and take those learned techniques to make the 3 canvases. Quilling is an art form where strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The name “quilling” is thought to come from the use of bird feathers, or quills, to roll the paper strips in the past. This is a technique course that a student can take and use on gourds or other media. Each canvas is 3″ x 3″. Most students will finish 85% to 100% of the project during class time.
Students need to bring: Apron
Instructor will supply: Everything that is needed for the quilling techniques – tools, canvases, papers, glues, instruction.

Using a prepared gourd bowl, students will use reed to complete a woven edge. Color choices will be available at class time. Gourd bowl is approximately 4.5” to 7” diameter. Most students will complete the majority of this basket during class time but may need to finish after class.
Students bring: Nothing
Instructor provides: Complete materials (gourd & reed) and tools are provided.

Sun-AM- 24 Dark Patterns

In this class you’ll learn how to use a small torch to wood burn an entire gourd dark and then etch out a delicate pattern of your choice. Bring your own power carver and try out several other brands after learning how to transfer patterns. The gourd provided will be a 4” whole cannonball gourd. Most students will complete about 80% of their project during class time.
Students bring: Small round carving bit (any size) and Dremel or other tool to fit it. Apron and N-95 or two-stage respirator mask.
Instructor provides: Gourd, wire, torch, water bath / sprayer, transfer paper, wire, beads and more!

Sun-AM-25 Birdhouse with Hummingbird or Butterfly

Starting with a gourd that is already drilled and painted white, students will apply hummingbird or butterfly decals with outdoor glue. They will use acrylic paints to go around the designs and to paint the flowers. Seal with poly-acrylic outdoor finish. Looks harder than it is! The gourd is a 10” tall martin gourd. Most students will leave with a finished project.
Students bring: Apron, paint brushes, paper towels
Instructor provides: Birdhouse gourd, drilled and painted white, birds, butterflies, acrylic paint, nitrite gloves, water container, paper towels.

Sun-AM-26 Design Your Own Fairy House

Kid’s Class! Students (preference goes to ages 8-18) will choose a gourd and learn to plan creating their fairy house. They will sketch in a door and windows, paint them, and execute their plan to add features such as stairs, moss, roofing materials, and a possible water feature. Students will work with various materials and glue them into place. Students will choose a gourd from 9” to 15” tall. Most students will complete the fairy house during class time.
Students bring apron, 3 paintbrushes of various sizes, a water container for rinsing brushes and any particular embellishment they would like to include on their fairy house.
Instructor provides: A whole gourd, a base, and a sheet with designs for doors and windows. Other materials that will be available include rocks, moss, greenery, flowers, sand, raffia, paint, glue, glue gun, pine cones, paint, trim, pebbles, clay, grapevine.
