Filigree Carving

Class Description: 

In this class you’ll learn how to design and carve a section of “filigree” into the gourd surface and will have the option of adding design elements such as butterflies, dragonflies, etc.  You’ll try different carving methods and burs and should complete at least one section in class.  Take advantage of learning from a master; I’ll provide you with plenty of tips and tricks that will make the technique much easier and the finished project look good!
This class will be held in a tent outside the building.
All day class!  Class will break for lunch from noon to 1 pm.

Chocolate Mint Trifle

Nothing is required. Optionally, bring an apron, basket weaving tools, mister, old towel. Instructor will have tools and basins for class use.

Class Description: 

This layered look reed basket is sure to tempt the taste buds of all who weave it. Starting with a wood base the student will build their “trifle” with plaited rows of mint green, dark chocolate brown, and natural ‘whip cream’. The basket is finished with a folded rim. Basket size is 9″L x 5″W x 5″H. Most students will leave with a finished basket.

Gourd Hatchling Alligator

Class Description: 

Welcome to the world little guy! In this class we’ll be creating an entire alligator nest complete with one hatching baby. You’ll learn how to make the soil base on wood, attach the gourd eggs (pre-painted), and use Quikwood and a spinner gourd to sculpt your own little gator. Glass eyes will be provided. We’ll be painting and completing the entire sculpture in class. (Note: It can take a few days for the soil base to dry. I will provide a cardboard crate for you take them home in.)  Finished project is about 8” wide.

Preparing Gourds for Crafting, plus Ornament

A mask (for gourd cleaning demo), apron, paint brushes, pencil, gloves.

Class Description: 

Learn an easy method to clean the outside of a gourd. Instructor will demo (outside) how to drill holes for a birdhouse, how to cut open a gourd for a bowl, and how to sand the edge perfect. Learn tips to make handling small gourds easy. Come back inside and finish with fun! Paint an ornament gourd with colorful alcohol inks. You’ll take home a finished ornament approximately 4″ to 6″ high.

Colorful Dotted Bowl

Instructor will provide:

Cleaned and painted gourd (approximately 5½” wide x 4½” tall), simple dotting tools, paint and paint pots, decorative bling

Class Description: 

Students will learn to create a colorful dotted bowl using acrylic paint on a small canteen gourd. Varying sizes of simple dotting tools will be provided as well as a detailed pattern. Skills taught include learning how to use the dotting tools to create uniform dots on the gourd in a mandala-like pattern. Students should expect to finish about 75% of this project during class time; instructor will provide information to complete the project.

Mi jarrón (My Vase)

Students should bring:

 Master pro carver or Dremel with small bits, apron, mask, gloves.

Instructor will provide:

Gourd (approximately 10″ to 13″ tall) already burned to advance the work, and wax. She will be giving a demonstration in class.

Class Description: 

In this class the student will learn to burn using a torch. We will use different sizes of bits to give the carving of our gourd an oval shape.
Students will leave with a finished project.
